Nanbeige4.3-33B is an open agent model worth testing, not trusting yet

The new open-weight model deserves an evaluation lane, not a shortcut into production.

What launched

Nanbeige published a dense 33B model under the Apache 2.0 license. Its model card advertises a context window of up to 512K tokens, tool-use templates and serving instructions for Transformers, SGLang and vLLM.

Why operators care

In Nanbeige's own table, the model leads 17 of 20 comparisons with similar-size open models. Those results have not yet been independently reproduced, and Hugging Face currently lists no inference provider for the model.

What we would do

This is a test-now, migrate-later release. We would shadow it on real workloads and make the decision from completed-task cost, latency and reliability rather than the vendor's benchmark table.

Our take

Nanbeige4.3-33B is not a reason to replace a production frontier model, but it is a reason to reopen the self-hosting spreadsheet. A permissively licensed dense 33B model that serves through familiar stacks is accessible enough to test under our own controls, and the vendor's agentic coding results are strong enough to justify that test. The catch is that the benchmark lead is self-reported, Hugging Face currently lists no inference provider, and the advertised 512K window can turn a seemingly cheap model into an expensive serving problem. We would place it behind a shadow route on a narrow set of coding, repository and tool-use tasks, cap context aggressively, and measure cost per completed task, tail latency, failure recovery and operator load against the current route. We would only promote it where it wins repeatedly. Open weights create bargaining power and deployment control; they do not create reliability for free.

How Virtual Arc can help

Turn insight into a working system.

We would build a multi-provider evaluation lane that runs Nanbeige beside your current models on real agent tasks, with shadow routing, permissions, billing and audit trails. If your team is considering self-hosted agents or a model migration, it is worth talking to us.
